Campus Use

Using MSU Trademarks on Merchandise

Campus departments, student organizations, and external partners frequently order merchandise featuring Michigan State University’s name, symbols, or logos. Because these items represent the university’s brand, they are subject to the same trademark and licensing standards — whether the items are sold or distributed as giveaways.

Only officially recognized campus departments and student organizations may use Michigan State University’s trademarks, logos, or symbols in connection with their names or activities. All uses must receive prior approval from University Trademarks and Licensing (UTL).

All merchandise featuring an MSU mark must be produced by an officially licensed vendor contracted through CLC, the university's licensing agency. These licensees pay for the right to produce MSU-branded items, maintain appropriate liability insurance, and are well-versed in the university’s trademark policies.

Working with an official licensee ensures your designs comply with university standards, streamlines the approval process, saves time and resources, and guarantees that royalties are properly managed on behalf of the university.

University Departments

University Trademarks and Licensing oversees how Michigan State University’s name, logos, and other marks are used on merchandise created or coordinated by university departments and programs. While department-specific branding is managed by University Communications and Marketing in line with MSU’s brand guidelines, UTL ensures that all merchandise featuring the university’s identity is produced by officially licensed vendors.

Alumni Communities

To protect the university’s intellectual property, comply with graphic standards, and determine if royalties are required to help support student scholarships and programming, the alumni community must seek authorization from UTL.
