Get Licensed

For more than four decades, Michigan State University's licensing program has been protecting the use of its logos and insignias on commercial products. The program has been successful for both the university and its licensees and retail partners. To continue expanding the program, MSU has appointed the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) to serve as its exclusive trademark licensing representative.

A trademark license grants individuals, organizations, or corporations authorization to produce commercial goods or services bearing the university's trademarks. MSU offers multiple license types to fit each vendor’s needs.

License Fees: The university has a range of royalty rates depending on the type of license, product, and logo use. Royalty rates are paid by the licensee on the wholesale prices you charge as a licensed vendor and/or the retail price sold directly to the customer via the vendor’s website.

 Additional fees can include:

  • Administrative and application fee via CLC
  • Minimal annual advances from all licensees to CLC are determined by the category of the product being licensed for production.

Licensed vendors are required to provide proof of insurance and marketing plans as specified by CLC.

MSU and CLC reserve the right to create new licensing programs and fees as market trends permit.

Browse the various license types and see what makes each of them unique across retail, specialty retail, and internal licenses.

The Standard License is intended for companies that are capable of extensive production and retail distribution of their product(s) and/or are introducing a unique and commercially viable product to the collegiate market. The Standard License is usually not for first-time applicants or companies without well-established marketing plans, existing product distribution and/or a financial history of selling licensed product. This license is for the production of emblematic merchandise that will be sold by the licensed vendor to retailers.

NCAA/Bowl/Conference

The Spartans are frequent postseason attendees! NCAA postseason, Bowl games, and Conference Championships are special licenses. Companies that wish to obtain rights to use the trademarks of the NCAA, bowl games, athletic conferences or another special event for use on licensed merchandise, either alone or in conjunction with an institution’s trademarks, will need this license type. Licensing rights to these properties can be more expensive to obtain, depending on the event and the extent of the rights and product categories.

  • License Review Process

    CLC Review

After the required paperwork is submitted to CLC, the potential licensee and company information is sent to the University for review and approval. The licensing application review process can take 4 to 6 weeks for total processing time.

    University Review

The university will require representative product sample(s) sent to the MSU Trademarks and Licensing office before final application review. This allows us to review the product quality and craftsmanship of logo embellishments.

    Decision Notification

Approval or disapproval of the license application by the university will be sent to CLC, who will notify the potential licensee of the decision.

    • If approved, the licensee will need to comply with all the agreement requirements, payment policies, and branding guidelines to activate the license.

    • If disapproved, the licensee may re-apply in a year for reconsideration of the licensing application. A new application must be submitted to re-apply.

For in-depth explanations regarding the requirements of the CLC licensing process, please visit their website. If you would like more information on the licensing process prior to starting the application, please contact licensing@clc.com.
