On a crisp fall Saturday in East Lansing, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan put rivalry aside to come together in support of breast cancer awareness — joined by entrepreneur, TODAY Show lifestyle and commerce contributor, and MSU licensee Jill Martin.
Martin, who was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 2023, has transformed her personal journey into a mission-driven platform for impact. Through her brand, The Warrior Effect, she is raising awareness about the importance of genetic testing while helping fund critical breast cancer research nationwide.
Earlier this year, Michigan State University partnered with Martin to launch a co-branded MSU collection. In October, that collaboration expanded with the release of a special rose-colored Warrior Effect loungewear line featuring the iconic MSU Spartan Helmet logo. A portion of the proceeds from the collection benefited the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center in Lansing, supporting life-saving care and research close to home.

To mark the launch, Martin hosted a pop-up and in-store event at the Spartan Bookstore ahead of the MSU vs. Michigan football game. The event brought Spartan fans together for an afternoon of community, storytelling, and purpose, as Martin shared her experience and the meaning behind the collection.
University Trademarks and Licensing extends its gratitude to the partners who helped make the event a success:
Jill Martin and her team for transforming a shared vision into a powerful on-campus activation
Follett Higher Education and the Spartan Bookstore for their hospitality and event partnership
Playfly Sports Properties for amplifying Martin’s message through WJR 760 AM and the Spartan Media Network, alongside fellow local breast cancer advocate Ralph Shaheen
The collaboration served as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when competition takes a back seat and community leads the way. Together, partners, fans, and advocates came together to support awareness, research, and the strength of Warriors everywhere.
